One of Bali’s best kept secrets, Alila Manggis is a secluded,
stylish resort located on a tranquil beach in Manggis, East Bali.
Set amidst a coconut grove, the resort is nestled between the sea
and the majestic Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred mountain.
All rooms and suites face the ocean with clear views across the
straits to Nusa Penida. A contemporary interpretation of traditional
Balinese architecture is artfully combined with modern amenities to
create a relaxed environment in harmony with its natural
surroundings.
Alila Manggis is situated within the regency of Karangasem, close to
the village of Candi Dasa, and provides the perfect base from which
to explore unspoiled east Bali. This area of the island is renowned
for its spectacular beauty, where the steep rise from coast to
mountain creates magical scenery. Here the local people follow a
traditional lifestyle, whether it is cultivating rice, farming,
fishing, weaving baskets and the famous double ikat textiles or salt
making.
Various walking tours are available at Alila Manggis, taking in
sights like Mount Agung, home to Bali’s mother temple at Besakih,
and the spectacular terraced hillsides. Other tours can be arranged
to see the traditional Bali Aga village of Tenganan, the water
palaces of Tirtagangga and Ujung, the weaving village of Sidemen,
the Kerta Gosa Palace of Justice at Klungkung and various Balinese
temples. |

DINING AND RESTAURANT:
Seasalt Restaurant is named after the neighbouring villages organic
salt farming and is part of the programme of learning with the 2 day
cooking school at Alila Manggis. Set in a traditional Balinese
pavilion on a lotus pond, seasalt Restaurant serves both a
contemporary menu of signature seafood and health food dishes and a
collection of Indonesian and Balinese favorites. The Restaurant’s
elegant and relaxed setting overlooks the resort’s beautifully
landscaped grounds and the ocean.
Poolside and garden dining is available at Alila Manggis. Set beneath
the tranquil coconut grove, the pool and extensive lawns are just a
step away from the beach.
Adjacent to the spacious reception area, the Lobby Lounge serves a
tempting array of refreshing drinks and cocktails.
COOKING SCHOOL:
Alila Manggis’ Cooking School is a unique course conducted over a half
day, 2 day or 5 day programme and was the first cooking school in Bali
and retains its name as the only East Balinese speciality cooking
school on the island.
The format for the school is such that participants spend half the day
in the kitchen and the other half exploring Bali from a culinary and
cultural point of view. Participants learn how to make sambal, classic
satay, Balinese fish dishes, curries and traditional sweets.
Alila Manggis’ Cooking School offers three programs of half-day, two
days or five days duration and never cook in the kitchen, only in
exotic locations.
There are seven 5-Day Programs and twenty-two 2-Day Programs available
for 2004. All programs, including a half-day course, can be made

OTHER FACILITIES AND SERVICES:
Swimming Pool
Alila Manggis' swimming pool is a central feature of the resort and is
designed as an unusual inverted pyramid. This creates shallow waters
around the edges and deep water in the middle. Set in landscaped
gardens under swaying coconut palms, it provides the perfect place to
lay back and enjoy the resort's peaceful, sunny environment.
Mandara Spa
The Mandara Spa offers a uniquely relaxing experience featuring
traditional Indonesian and Balinese treatments from facials to
aromatherapy massage.
Leisure Concierge
The hotel has its own leisure concierge where guests can book trips to
local attractions and excursions from whitewater rafting to deep-sea
fishing.
Water Sports
Wave skis and snorkel masks and fins are available for hire. The
resort also has its own Balinese outrigger that can take guests from
the beach in front of the hotel to the Blue Lagoon, a beautiful and
colourful reef teeming with marine life. East Bali has the most
spectacular dive sites on the island, and all are located close to
Alila Manggis. Diving and fishing trips can be arranged through the
hotel.
Trekking
Two to six-hour treks are available at the Alila Manggis in the
company of knowledgeable local hotel guides. Trips include a trek to
Gumang Hill for stunning views of verdant rice terraces and Mount
Agung; Kastala to Tenganan, a trek off the beaten track through rice
terraces and small farms to the Bali Aga village of Tenganan, famous
for its double ikat weaving and unique basket-making; and the Mount
Agung trek for the truly adventurous, a four-hour climb reaching the
top in time for sunrise.
Mountain Biking
Mountain bikes are available for hire at the hotel along with maps of
suggested routes through the spectacular scenery and villages.

Alila Manggis has the perfect setting for an intimate wedding. We
warmly invite you to experience the tranquil and inspiring
surroundings amidst the beauty and tradition of Bali. Ceremonies can
be organized on the grounds of the Alila Manggis or on the beach in
front of the hotel (tides permitting). With advance preparation, the
Alila Manggis can prepare for its guests a traditional wedding
ceremony, the Balinese nuptial blessing, bridal procession, a cocktail
reception and a royal Balinese dinner.

The 54 rooms and two corner suites of Alila Manggis are housed in
traditional two-storey thatched Balinese pavilions reminiscent of
the village wantilan or meeting hall. The Superior Rooms, located
on the lower floor of each block, boast a private terrace while
the Deluxe Rooms on the upper level have a balcony with day bed.
All rooms are designed to maximize the views across the coconut
grove, the swimming pool and the sea.
The two spacious suites are situated on the upper level of the
building closest to the beach. Large balconies surround the suites
suitable for use as an outdoor dining area or sundeck. The
spacious rooms include a living and dining area. All interiors are
designed with fabrics and finishings to reflect the local
environment. |
